Diode Laser Working Principle

A diode laser operates by using a forward-biased semiconductor p-n junction to achieve population inversion, which stimulates the emission of coherent light.Basic Working PrincipleA diode laser is a semiconductor device that emits coherent, monochromatic, and highly focused light through the process of stimulated emission. It consists of a p-n junction made from direct bandgap semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) or gallium nitride (GaN), . When a forward voltage is applied across the junction, electrons from the n-type region and holes from the p-type region are injected into the active region, where they recombine. This recombination releases energy in the form of photons.Stimulated Emission and Population InversionThe key to laser operation is population inversion, where more electrons occupy higher energy states than lower ones. When a photon of the correct energy interacts with an excited electron, it stimulates the electron to drop to a lower energy level, emitting a new photon that is coherent with the stimulating photon—having the same phase, frequency, and direction . This chain reaction amplifies light within the semiconductor.Optical Cavity and Light AmplificationThe diode laser includes an optical resonant cavity, typically formed by cleaved or coated facets of the semiconductor chip, which reflect photons back and forth through the active region. This feedback mechanism ensures that the emitted light is amplified and emerges as a narrow, intense laser beam . The wavelength of the emitted light is determined by the bandgap energy of the semiconductor material.Key FeaturesCoherence: The emitted photons are in phase, producing a highly focused beam.Monochromaticity: The light has a single wavelength, which can range from ultraviolet to infrared depending on the material.Compactness and Efficiency: Diode lasers are small, electrically efficient, and capable of high power output relative to their size . In summary, a diode laser converts electrical energy into coherent light by electron-hole recombination in a forward-biased p-n junction, amplified through stimulated emission within a resonant optical cavity, producing a highly focused and monochromatic laser beam.
