How to open the fiber optic cable stranded wire

To open a fiber optic cable with stranded wire, carefully strip the outer jacket, separate the internal fibers and Kevlar strands, and prepare the fiber for splicing or connector installation using specialized tools.Tools You Will NeedFiber optic jacket stripper or three-hole jacket stripperKevlar or aramid fiber scissorsFiber optic cutterPrecision fiber cleaverAlcohol wipes for cleaningOptional: Visual fault locator or OTDR for testingStep-by-Step Procedure1. Identify the Damage or Section to Open Before stripping, locate the section of the cable you need to work on. If repairing, use a visual inspection or an OTDR to pinpoint breaks or damaged areas to avoid unnecessary cutting . 2. Slide Connector Boot (if applicable) If you plan to attach a connector, slide the connector boot onto the cable before stripping the jacket . 3. Strip the Outer Jacket Use a fiber optic jacket stripper to remove approximately 2 inches (50 mm) of the outer cable jacket. Be careful not to nick the internal fibers. For stranded cables, this exposes both the optical fibers and the Kevlar strength members . 4. Separate and Trim Kevlar Strands Carefully separate the Kevlar or aramid strands from the fiber bundle. Use Kevlar scissors to trim any excess strands without cutting the fiber itself . 5. Strip the Fiber Coating Use a fiber optic stripper to remove the protective coating from each fiber, exposing the bare glass. Avoid scratching or nicking the fiber core, as this can affect signal quality . 6. Cleave the Fiber Ends Use a precision fiber cleaver to cut the fiber ends at a clean, perpendicular angle. This ensures a low-loss connection for splicing or connector installation . 7. Clean the Fiber Wipe the exposed fiber with an alcohol wipe to remove any debris or oils. Clean fibers are essential for reliable splicing or mechanical connections . 8. Splice or Connect Insert the prepared fiber into a mechanical splice or connector according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lock the connector and, if needed, slide the boot into place . 9. Test the Connection Use a visual fault locator or fiber optic meter to verify that the fiber is properly seated and transmitting light without significant loss .Safety TipsAlways wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from glass shards.Handle Kevlar strands carefully; they can be sharp.Avoid bending fibers sharply to prevent microbends or breaks.Work in a clean, well-lit area to prevent contamination of the fiber ends. By following these steps, you can safely open a fiber optic cable with stranded wire, prepare the fibers, and ensure a reliable connection for splicing or connector installation .
