A multimode step-index fiber is an optical fiber with a large core and a uniform refractive index, allowing multiple light modes to propagate, typically used for short-distance, low-speed communication.Structure and Working PrincipleA step-index multimode fiber consists of a core with a uniform refractive index and a surrounding cladding with a lower refractive index, creating a sharp refractive index change at the core-cladding interface . Light propagates through the fiber by total internal reflection, following a zigzag path along the core. The core diameter is relatively large, usually 50 µm to 1000 µm, which allows multiple light rays or modes to travel simultaneously . This is in contrast to single-mode fibers, which have a much smaller core and support only one mode.Modal Dispersion and BandwidthBecause multiple modes travel different paths, modal dispersion occurs, causing light pulses to spread over time. This leads to inter-symbol interference (ISI), increasing the bit error rate (BER) and limiting the fiber's bandwidth .
