Optical fiber communication uses light

Optical fiber communication transmits data by sending light pulses through thin glass or plastic fibers using total internal reflection. How Optical Fiber WorksOptical fiber communication relies on light as the carrier of information. The system converts electrical signals into light pulses using a light source, typically a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED), which represent digital data as binary 1s and 0s (intensity modulation) . These light pulses travel through the core of the optical fiber, which is made of ultra-pure glass or plastic to minimize signal loss . The core is surrounded by a cladding with a slightly lower refractive index. This difference in refractive index ensures that light remains confined within the core through total internal reflection (TIR), allowing the signal to propagate over long distances with minimal attenuation . The fiber is further protected by a buffer coating or outer sheath to prevent mechanical damage and environmental effects .Types of Optical FibersSingle-mode fiber: Allows only one propagation mode of light, ideal for long-distance, high-bandwidth communication .Multi-mode fiber: Supports multiple light paths or modes, suitable for shorter distances and local networks. Graded-index (GI) fibers gradually change the refractive index in the core to reduce modal dispersion .Transmission ProcessSignal Conversion: Electrical data is converted into light pulses by the transmitter.Propagation: Light travels through the fiber core, reflecting repeatedly at the core-cladding boundary due to TIR.Detection: At the receiver, a photodiode converts the light back into electrical signals for processing .Advantages of Optical FiberHigh bandwidth: Can carry large amounts of data at high speeds.Long-distance transmission: Lower attenuation than copper cables, allowing signals to travel tens of kilometers without repeaters .Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Ideal for environments with electrical noise .Security: Difficult to tap without detection, making it suitable for sensitive communications . Optical fiber communication is widely used in telecommunications, internet infrastructure, cable TV, and medical or industrial applications, forming the backbone of modern high-speed networks .

Optical fiber is used as a medium for telecommunication and computer networking because it is flexible and can be bundled as cables. It is especially advantageous for long-distance communications, because infrared light propagates through the fiber with much lower attenuation compared to electricity in electrical cables. This allows long distances to be spanned with few repeaters.
