Working principle of laser amplifying diodes

A laser amplifying diode works by generating coherent light through stimulated emission in a forward-biased semiconductor p-n junction, where population inversion and an optical cavity amplify photons into a focused laser beam.Basic MechanismA laser diode is a semiconductor device similar to a light-emitting diode (LED) but designed to produce coherent, monochromatic, and highly directional light. It consists of a p-n junction or a p-i-n structure, where the intrinsic layer serves as the active region for light generation . When a forward bias voltage is applied, electrons from the n-type region and holes from the p-type region are injected into the active region, where they recombine and release energy as photons .Stimulated Emission and Population InversionThe key to laser operation is stimulated emission. When an electron recombines with a hole, it emits a photon. If this photon interacts with another excited electron, it can stimulate the emission of a second photon with identical frequency, phase, polarization, and direction. This process multiplies the number of coherent photons . To achieve this, the diode must reach population inversion, where more electrons occupy the excited state than the ground state. This non-equilibrium condition is created by injecting sufficient current into the junction, ensuring that stimulated emission dominates over absorption .Optical Cavity and AmplificationThe active region is enclosed by an optical cavity formed by reflective coatings at the ends of the diode. One end is fully reflective, and the other is partially reflective, allowing some light to escape as the laser output. Photons bounce back and forth within the cavity, stimulating further emissions and amplifying the light exponentially until the output reaches a steady-state laser beam . The emitted light is coherent, monochromatic, and well-directed, making it suitable for applications like fiber-optic communications, laser pointers, and optical storage devices .Summary of StepsEnergy Absorption: Electrons are excited from the valence band to the conduction band by the applied current.Spontaneous Emission: Some electrons recombine with holes, emitting photons randomly.Stimulated Emission and Amplification: Photons stimulate further emissions in the optical cavity, producing a coherent, amplified laser beam . The wavelength of the laser depends on the semiconductor material and the cavity length, allowing emission across the infrared to ultraviolet spectrum . This combination of population inversion, stimulated emission, and optical feedback defines the working principle of a laser amplifying diode.
