These currents occur when there is a phase-to-phase fault, unbalanced load, or system asymmetry, causing the current in one or more phases to differ in magnitude or phase angle from the others .How It WorksThe relay measures the negative sequence component of the current (I₂) using current transformers (CTs) or voltage transformers (VTs) and applies symmetrical component analysis to extract the negative sequence from the three-phase signals .Negative sequence currents rotate in the opposite direction to the rotor of a generator or motor, inducing double-frequency currents in the rotor, wedges, retaining rings, and damper windings .These induced currents cause localized heating, which can rapidly damage the rotor or stator if not cleared promptly.
