Access Switch Connection Routing Mode

Configuring access switch routing involves setting IP addresses, VLANs, default gateways, and optionally static or dynamic routing to ensure proper network connectivity.Accessing the SwitchYou can manage a switch using either the GUI (web interface) or CLI (Command Line Interface). The GUI is more visual and user-friendly, while the CLI provides more granular control . To access the switch via GUI:Ensure the host PC can reach the switch over the network.Open a web browser and enter the switch's IP address (default is often 192.168.0.1).Log in with the default credentials (usually admin/admin) and change the password for security.Navigate to the interface or VLAN settings to configure IP addresses and routing. For CLI access, connect via a console cable and terminal emulator (e.g., PuTTY), then log in and enter User EXEC Mode followed by Privileged EXEC Mode to configure settings .Configuring IP Addresses and VLANsBy default, all ports may belong to VLAN 1. You can assign a static IP to the VLAN interface to manage the switch.In the web interface, go to L3 FEATURES > Interface, select the VLAN, and edit the IPv4 address. Choose Static mode and enter the desired IP address .Ensure the host PC can route to the new IP address before saving changes.Default Gateway and RoutingTo enable routing, configure the default gateway for the switch. In the web interface, navigate to L3 FEATURES > Static Routing > IPv4 Static Routing Config, create a new route, and set the destination as 0.0.0.0 with subnet mask 0.0.0.0 .For remote network connectivity, you can use static routes or dynamic routing protocols like BGP. Static routes are suitable for small networks, while BGP scales better for multiple remote subnets .If using BGP, configure the Peer AS and Router ID for the remote network. Static routes take precedence if both methods are used.Connecting Switch to RouterUse an Ethernet cable to connect an available port on the switch to a LAN port on the router .Power on both devices and verify connectivity via indicator LEDs.This connection allows the switch to forward traffic to the router and access external networks.Security and MaintenanceDisable unused ports to prevent unauthorized access.Configure port security and access control lists (ACLs) as needed.Save the running configuration to the startup configuration to retain settings after a reboot .
